The Science

The Science Behind HelioLiver

HelioLiver LDT is a simple blood test that reads cfDNA methylation, protein biomarkers, and clinical data to support early HCC detection in high-risk patients.

How HelioLiver Works

Three Signals, One Clear Result

HelioLiver LDT brings together three different types of information from a simple blood draw, then interprets them together to assess the likelihood of hepatocellular carcinoma in high-risk patients.ar carcinoma in high-risk patients.

cfDNA Methylation

Reads the DNA methylation signals of cancer circulating in the blood, the molecular changes that can appear before symptoms.

Protein Biomarkers

Adds a second, independent layer of signal that strengthens the assessment alongside the methylation data.

Clinical Data

Brings both biological signals together with clinical context for a clear, actionable result.

Why It Matters

Why Methylation Matters for Early Detection

Cancer cells create detectable methylation changes in the blood, often before a tumour is large enough to be seen on imaging. By reading these methylation signals, HelioLiver LDT is designed to identify hepatocellular carcinoma at an earlier, more treatable stage, particularly the small, early-stage lesions that are hardest to catch with ultrasound.

Detect before it's visible. Methylation signals can appear before a tumour is large enough to be seen on imaging — opening a window for earlier, more treatable intervention.

Clinical Validation

Validated in the CLiMB Trial

HelioLiver LDT was validated in the CLiMB trial, a prospective, blinded, multicenter US study in patients at high risk of HCC due to cirrhosis, published in the Journal of Hepatology, May 2026.

High-Risk Population

Studied in high-risk cirrhotic patients, the population that most needs reliable HCC surveillance.

Head-to-Head with Ultrasound

Compared directly against ultrasound, the current standard of care, detecting Stage I HCC at 40% vs 10%.

MRI-Confirmed

HCC status was confirmed by MRI, anchoring the trial's results to a clinical reference standard.
